Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-National Hockey League scouts have labeled five current Waterloo Black Hawks as leading North American prospects eligible for the NHL Draft to be held in New Jersey early this summer.
Defenseman Ian McCoshen leads the Waterloo skaters on the list after strong showings in preliminary rankings earlier this season. Linemates Taylor Cammarata and Justin Kloos each found their way among the elite group of 210 defensemen and forwards, after completing the regular season first and second respectively in USHL scoring. Both Hawks goaltenders, Cal Petersen and Eamon McAdam were highly-regarded among available netminders.
McCoshen charted 24th among top amateur players in Canada and the United States. He had graded as an "A" prospect in Central Scouting's initial preview last fall, then was 21st in Midterm Rankings released in January. The Boston College recruit in his third USHL season finished second in scoring among league defensemen with 44 points, from 11 goals and 33 assists. His +35 plus/minus rating was second on the team and third among league blue-liners. McCoshen played in 150 career regular season games, plus 21 more in the Clark Cup playoffs. So far this postseason, he has one goal and two assists.
Cammarata, the USHL leader in points, was placed 193rd by Central Scouting. His second year in Waterloo was the third-best individual offensive season during the Black Hawks' junior era; Cammarata produced 38 goals and 55 assists in 59 games. Committed to the University of Minnesota, his +39 rating led the Hawks. All totaled from two campaigns with the Hawks, his 162 points rank second in team history, while his 97 assists are the most in the 34-years Waterloo's hockey team has been an all-junior franchise.
Kloos will join Cammarata at Minnesota next season after being the state's high school Mr. Hockey award winner in 2012. He is on the Central Scouting draft list for the second consecutive year, clocking in at 203rd after placing 173rd in 2012. With 58 assists, the Lakeville, Minnesota, native set up the second most goals during a single season in franchise history. Adding 29 goals, his 87 points were the most among first-year skaters in the league.
A Notre Dame recruit and Waterloo native, Petersen maintained his ranking from midterms as the fourth most-lauded North American goalie in this draft class. His strong finish contributed; Petersen won seven of nine decisions after the beginning of March, stopping 93.8% of the shots sent his direction. Overall, his record at the end of 2012/13 stood at 21-11-1 with a save percentage at 90.6%. Petersen earned three shutouts. He and McAdam are hoping to become the first goalies drafted after playing in Waterloo since Phil Osaer 14 years ago.
McAdam was just two slots behind Petersen on the goalie list, moving up one place from the midterm rankings. His second full season in the USHL included a record of 17-9-1 and two shutouts. The future Penn State Nittany Lion's 28-save performance on the final day of the regular season in a 5-2 victory against the Indiana Ice made him only the sixth Waterloo goalie with 30 career regular season wins. Not counted in that total are three victories which helped the Hawks earn silver and made McAdam the star goaltender during the 2012 Junior Club World Cup in August. McAdam also led the U.S. Junior Select Team to gold during the 2012 World Junior A Challenge in November.
While the Hawks were missing McAdam and several skaters during the Junior A Challenge, Jake Jackson filled in as a substitute player for two games and contributed a goal. The forward from Tartan High School in Minnesota was also listed by Central Scouting at 170th.
