Overtime Ends Series, Season
April 24, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Gabe Guertler scored 6:38 into overtime Wednesday at Scheels Arena, giving the Fargo Force a 4-3 win against the Waterloo Black Hawks and pushing his team to a three-games-to-two series victory in the USHL Western Conference semifinals.
The goal was batted in after an ankle-high rebound bounced Guertler's direction below the right wing circle. Dave Gust took the initial shot and was credited with his third assist of the game and eighth of the series.
During the opening shift of the game, Black Hawks pressure had resulted in a goal for Mark Friedman. His shot from above the right wing circle went into the net just below the crossbar and over the shoulder of Cameron Johnson. Another long-range opportunity led to the equalizer at 7:38; Austin Ortega was located between the crease and left wing circle when he redirected the initial point shot by Chris Dienes to square the contest. Following Waterloo's early surge, it was a busier period for Hawks netminder Eamon McAdam, who made 16 saves before intermission.
Fargo pulled in front 1:36 into the second period. Guertler knocked a shot by Gust down and through the pads of McAdam. Although the Force continued to pressure throughout the period, the Waterloo goalie was equal to their other eleven chances. His effort paid off at 18:11, when Zach Stepan scored on another redirection, changing the course of Ian McCoshen's shot while standing on the left hash mark at 18:11.
The teams exchanged goals again in the third. Waterloo took the lead when Stepan dragged the puck to the top of the right wing circle and snapped a wrist shot into the net at 7:17. However the Force recovered with 3:34 remaining in regulation; following a long sequence in the Waterloo zone, Alex Iafallo knocked a rebound over the goal line.
The Force outshot the Hawks in every period, including overtime, but McAdam kept Waterloo in it with 45 saves. Johnson earned the victory in his first appearance of the postseason, making 34 stops.
Wednesday's loss concludes a year which included a franchise record-tying 39 regular season victories and the Hawks' tenth playoff appearance in eleven seasons under P.K. O'Handley. It was the first time in franchise history Waterloo players finished first, second, and third in USHL scoring, led by Taylor Cammarata, Justin Kloos, and Stepan. For several Hawks stars, the 2012/13 season will lead to a once-in-a-lifetime experience in June when they are drafted by National Hockey League teams; McCoshen, Cammarata, Kloos, McAdam, and Cal Petersen were all listed in the Central Scouting pre-draft rankings released earlier Wednesday.
