Five-Goal Third Period Seals 6-2 Win over Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, LA. (January 1, 2014) - T he Pensacola Ice Flyers kicked off a five-game road trip Wednesday night with a New Year's Day battle with the first place Louisiana IceGators. The Ice Flyers scored five goals in the third period to complete a resounding 6-2 comeback win and move to just one point out of the top spot in the SPHL.

Podge Turnbull opened the scoring less than five minutes into the game with a power play goal. For Turnbull, it was his seventh goal of the season. Steve Bergin and Shaun Arvai assisted on the goal. The Ice Flyers drastically outshot the IceGators during the first by a 10-3 margin.

Former Ice Flyer Matt Robertson tied the game up 5:42 into the second period. Then, five seconds past the midway point of the game, Louisiana took the 2-1 lead with a shorthanded goal by Adam Stuart.

The Ice Flyers came out of the second intermission with a determination to not only win, but win big. They put 12 shots on net and found twine on five of them. The first goal of the third came when Turnbull picked up his second goal of the game. It came almost six minutes into the frame. This one came assisted by Steve Whitely and Corey Banfield. Malcolm Lyles' first goal as an Ice Flyer gave Pensacola the lead again with 11:51 remaining in regulation. Adam Pawlick and John Dunbar assisted on what proved to be the game winning goal. Banfield potted a goal of his own, assisted by Justin Alonzo, with 9:40 left. Pawlick scored with 2:57 left to push the Ice Flyers' lead to 5-2 with Brett Lutes getting the only assist. Mackenzie Micks, playing his first game after being acquired from the Mississippi Surge, had the final dagger when he scored less than 30 seconds later and made it 6-2.

Ross MacKinnon stopped 16 of Louisiana's 18 shots and improved his record to 6-1-1. Pawlick was named the second star of the game while Turnbull was named the number one star.

The Ice Flyers' next game is Friday, Jan. 3 when they visit Knoxville, Tennessee to take on the Knoxville Ice Bears. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Central Time.
