Quad City Steamwheelers News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Although the AFL on NBC had the week off, five former Quad City Steamwheelers did not.

New Orleans VooDoo offensive specialist turned wide receiver/linebacker Ira Gooch made his AFL debut in style on Sunday.

Gooch was the top receiver for the VooDoo with five receptions for 87 yards and scored the games first touchdown, an 11- yard catch from quarterback John Fitzgerald. Gooch added a tackle on defense to help the VooDoo to a 48-31 victory over the Carolina Cobras, which improved the VooDoo to an AFL best 7-1 record.

Despite a 60-43 loss to the Orlando Predators, Las Vegas Gladiators wide receiver/defensive back Dennison Robinson and fullback/linebacker Frank Carter had some impressive stats.

Robinson had five receptions for 60 yards and added 1.5 tackles on defense. Robinson also returned two kicks for 32 yards. Carter had a one-yard carry for a touchdown and had 1.5 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.

In Austin, defensive specialist Brent Browner guided the Wrangles defense to a 65-60 victory over the Philadelphia Soul. Browner had 2.5 tackles on the day.

In a heart-breaking 55-52 loss to the San Jose Sabercats, Los Angeles Avengers offensive lineman/defensive lineman Sean McNamara had two tackles.

The New York Dragons had their bye week, giving wide receiver/linebacker Chris Anthony time to heal up as he has spent the past few weeks on the injured reserve list.

Be sure to tune into the AFL on NBC this Sunday as it returns to KWQC-TV6 this Sunday with the Dallas Desperados taking on the expansion Philadelphia Soul at 11 a.m. (CDT).
