San Diego Riptide News Release
The af2's fifth-anniversary season kicked off this weekend with two games. The Bossier City Battle Wings topped the Birmingham Steeldogs, 63-41, and the Riptide's divisional rivals, the Hawaiian Islanders and the Central Valley Coyotes, faced off in a 68-35 Hawaii victory.
Hawaii, the defending National West Division champions, set a team record with the 33-point margin of victory and the 68 points marked the Islanders' second-highest offensive effort ever. Central Valley, who is returning to the league after a one-year hiatus, is coached by former Riptide head coach, Cree Morris.
San Diego kicks off its 2004 season this Saturday, Apr. 3, in Little Rock, Ark. against the Arkansas Twisters. The Riptide split two games with Arkansas in 2003, winning their first meeting, 40-34, on a fourth-quarter touchdown pass from Kane Claunch to Jerry Garrett. They dropped their second meeting the following week after Twisters QB Ricky Hebert completed 28-of-42 passes for 327 yards and seven touchdowns.
Riptide fans will have their first chance to catch the new season of exciting arena football on Friday, April 9 when the âTide take on the Green Bay Blizzard in their home opener. Claunch and the rest of the Riptide won't be the only San Diego football stars in the house that night, however. Chargers great Junior Seau will be in attendance for the game and will be presented with an honorary Riptide jersey before kickoff in honor of his extensive contributions to the San Diego community, both on and off the field.
The first 5,000 fans in attendance for the game will also receive Junior Seau Riptide t-shirts, featuring the Riptide logo along with Seau's name and number â55' emblazoned on the back, courtesy of Wells Fargo. Fans can get their tickets for "Junior Seau Night" at the Sports Arena for as little as $12 each at the Sports Arena box office, Ticketmaster, or by calling the Riptide offices at 866-RIPTIDE.
