Five Familiar Faces Back at Fleming
Wilson, NC - The Tobs staff is excited to announce the return of five pitchers from the 2019 North Division Championship team, who look to make a big impact on the 2020 Tobs. Nate Fiala (East Stroudsburg University), Alex Hart (Barton College), Taylor Soper (Marian University), Grant Fremion (St. Louis University), and Steven Worley (University of Mount Olive) will be stepping back on the pitcher's mound at Historic Fleming Stadium during the Summer of 2020.
The most veteran Tobs player on the 2020 roster will be, Nate Fiala a Scranton, PA native and a starter for both the Wilson Tobs and East Stroudsburg University (ESU). Coach Harry Markotay stated "It's great having Fiala return after what I'm sure will be another great season for him at East Stroudsburg. He is a guy you know will go out and challenge hitters and that's what we like from all of our pitchers. We expect Fiala to have another great summer for us as well as be a leader of our pitching staff". This will be Fiala's third season with the Tobs and his junior year at ESU. Fiala is coming off very impressive seasons with both the Tobs and ESU. Last season with ESU he threw 46 innings with 51 strikeouts, allowing him to end his sophomore year with an ERA of 2.89 and a 4-2 record. Fiala built on his 2019 collegiate season by returning to the Tobs for his second year and put up 28 innings pitched and 22 strikeouts, as well as taking on some relief pitching responsibility. Fiala was also named a 2019 CPL All-star for the North Division. He will look to be a leader once again for the Tobs and continue his pitching prowess from past seasons.
Next on the list, hailing from Raleigh, NC, is Alex Hart. Hart is coming off a hot 2018-2019 season for the local Barton College with 48 innings pitched and 55 strikeouts as a sophomore. He has had a busy career with successes at Barton College his freshman and sophomore years, as well as the Edenton Steamers as a freshman before coming to the Tobs in 2019 as a sophomore. Last season for the Tobs, Hart recorded 6 appearances with 10 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.59. "Alex Hart was an awesome late addition for the Tobs last summer to eat up some innings. He did a great job out of the pen and we expect him to have an even bigger impact this upcoming season" said General Manager Mike Bell. Hart was a big contributor to the Tobs' defensive success in the 2019 season and we expect nothing but continued success in the coming 2020 season.
Taylor Soper, who began his career as a starter at Kentucky Wesleyan, is now a junior at Marian University, entering his second season with the Wilson Tobs. As a freshman at Kentucky Wesleyan, Soper had eight appearances, threw twelve innings with a record of 1-1, and struck out a total of thirteen batters. Sophomore year was an equally successful year with 18 innings thrown, a record of 1-2 and 14 strikeouts leading to an ERA of 5.89. During the 2019 season with the Tobs, Soper filled the role of the setup man with 20 appearances and pitching 28 strikeouts. The junior chemistry major has big plans for the coming 2020 season and looks to build on his pitching resume with the Tobs. Coach Markotay voiced his excitement by saying "Soper is a fun guy to watch pitch especially in big situations. He is a multi- sport athlete at Marian University where he is a kicker for the football team and of course a part of the pitching staff for the baseball program. He brings that football mentality to the mound which makes him a go to guy out of the pen".
Grant Fremion locks in as a relief pitcher for both St. Louis University (SLU) and the Wilson Tobs this season. "Fremion came to us as a freshman last summer and had a ton of starts. He's a LHP that has good offspeed stuff and good velo on his fastball. We expect this summer after having a year to develop even more he will be very big part of our staff", said Markotay. As a freshmanat SLU Fremion had a solid first season throwing 24 innings, striking out 13 hitters, a .276 average against, and went 2-1 with a 4.5 ERA. Fremion saw success with the Tobs in 2019 pitching 27 innings while striking out 20 batters, both as a starter and a relief man. Having a power lefty arm such as Fremion for another summer season will be crucial for the Tobs to continue their success throughout the CPL.
Last, but least on our list of returning pitchers we have Steven Worley, a local kid from Kenly, North Carolina. Worley, who is continuing his baseball career at the University of Mount Olive, pitched 26 innings his freshman and sophomore year at UMO and totaled 19 strikeouts. Coming in as a sophomore for the Tobs in the 2019 season, Worley had 19 innings pitched and threw 19 strikeouts last summer out of the pen. Worley is another asset to the pitching lineup that brings a unique aspect to the Tobs defensive game. "Worley was another big part of our pitching staff last season who had a ton of appearances out of the pen. We expect him to have a great season at Mount Olive and then continue to carry it over into the summer and make an impact again as another big returner that helps make the Tobs pitching staff so strong", stated Bell. Worley may be a local kid from Kenly, but he is excited to call Wilson, NC his true home on the mound once again.
