Five Errors Cost Joes in 6-1 Loss

July 10, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Anderson Joes News Release

After saying his team beat itself in Monday's loss to the Bradenton Juice, Joes manager Desi Wilson couldn't be happy with his team's performance in Tuesday's defeat. Anderson committed a season-high five errors, including three in the sixth inning, which led to four runs and helped Bradenton leave with a 6-1 win.

Making matters worse, Anderson (0-2, 13-34 overall) only mustered one hit on offense, a season-low for the Joes' bats in front of 767 at Anderson Memorial Stadium.

Bradenton's Brian Gartley and Anderson' s Daniel Howard made for a good starting pitching matchup, as Gartley lasted seven innings for the win, allowing just the one hit and three walks while striking out six. Gartley improved to 4-1 for Bradenton (2-0, 26-20) with the win.

Howard, who took the loss for the Joes and dropped to 1-1 on the year, allowed four runs in 5.1 innings in just his second start of the season, but only one of the runs was earned. The three errors committed by Anderson in the sixth inning torpedoed any chance of victory, as shortstop Jeury Espinal made two and relief pitcher Henry Martinez made one on an errant pickoff attempt after replacing Howard mid-inning. Bradenton would not relinquish the lead after that and Anderson only put one runner on base in the final four innings to follow.

"You really can't win when you only have one hit as a team and one run, but you know how it goes," Howard said, "that's baseball."

Offensively for Anderson, Billy Hogan had the only Joes hit, using it to drive in Espinal in the fourth inning to make the game 1-1 at the time.

Anderson and Bradenton meet for game three of the series tomorrow. Probable starters are Pete Nickerson (0-2) for the Joes and Luke Palmer (1-0) for the Juice.

First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
