Chesapeake Baysox News Release
BOWIE, Md. - The Bowie Baysox announce today the selection of five players to the Western Division team for the 2012 Eastern League All-Star Game Wednesday, July 11, in Reading, Pa. INF Buck Britton, 2B Jonathan Schoop, OF Robbie Widlansky, RHP Zach Clark and LHP Pedro Viola were voted into the game. For more information on the All-Star game, fans can visit www.readingphillies.com.
Widlansky has been one of the most consistent hitters on the team this year as he leads the team with 20 doubles, 76 hits and a .302 batting average. The lefty also leads the team and is fifth in the Eastern League in RBIs (47). His bat has come alive in June and in 22 games, he has batted .420 with 2 HR and 21 RBI. He has the highest on base percentage (.515), batting average, OPS (1.132) and is tied for the most RBI in the month.
Schoop has been the team's primary second baseman this season despite being the second youngest player in the Eastern League. In 66 games, he is hitting .244 with 11 doubles, 24 RBIs and just 13 errors in 60 games at second base. He is tied for third on the team with six home runs.
Despite battling an injury that kept him out of the lineup for the second half of April, Britton has been a reliable to hitter and solid utility fielder. He has played 16 games in the infield and 25 games in the outfield while batting .282 with 13 doubles and 23 RBIs.
Viola is being named to the Eastern League All-Star Game roster for the second season in a row. The lefty has made 23 appearances and pitched 28.1 innings to the tune of a 3.18 ERA with four saves. After giving up five runs without recording an out in his first outing of the season, Viola now has a 1.59 ERA in his last 22 appearances. He is averaging 14.0 K/9, which would be the highest among Eastern League relievers, but he is three innings shy of qualifying.
Clark has been the Baysox best starting pitcher this season. He is 6-4 with a 3.12 ERA over 13 starts this season with 42 strikeouts and 20 walks in 80.2 innings. He was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Sunday, June 17 when he went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 7.0 innings.
