New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Trenton, NJ- Nate Starner worked a season-high 5.1 innings to earn his first Eastern League win, and Nick Gorneault went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats earned a doubleheader split with the Trenton Thunder with a 7-2 victory in the nightcap Sunday evening at Waterfront Park. Trenton won the opening game on a walk-off double from Austin Krum, 5-4.
Gorneault (2-for-3, HR, 3 RBI) gave New Hampshire (57-69) its first lead of the series when he belted a two-out, two-run opposite field home run, his sixth, off Jeremy Bleich in the second inning, lifting the Fisher Cats to a 2-0 advantage.
New Hampshire tacked on four more runs against Bleich in the third when David Cooper (0-for-2, 2 RBI) drove in two runs with a bases-loaded ground out, scoring Jonathan Diaz (1-for-2, BB, 2 R), who singled, from third, and Todd Donovan (0-for-3, BB, R), who hustled home from second on the grounder, sliding under the tag of Thunder catcher P.J. Pilittere for a 4-0 lead. Al Quintana (1-for-4, RBI, R) and Gorneault added RBI singles, pushing the lead to 6-0.
The Fisher Cats upped the lead to 7-0 in the fourth without the benefit of a hit against reliever Grant Duff. Diaz walked, Manny Mayorson (0-for-1, SAC, HBP) was hit by a pitch, forcing him to leave the game. A wild pitch advanced Diaz to third, and Brad Emaus (0-for-2, SF, BB, RBI, R) knocked in his 62nd run of the season with his team-leading seventh sacrifice fly.
Starner (1-1) allowed two runs on six hits to record the victory, fanning two and walking one.
Trystan Magnuson relieved Starner with two men on base in the sixth, allowing a two-run single to Chris Malec (1-for-3, 2 RBI) that ended Starner's personal scoreless-innings streak at 13.2 consecutive frames.
Bleich (3-6) was tagged for six runs on six hits in three innings to take the loss. The left-hander fanned two and walked two.
In game one, the Fisher Cats ended their 18-inning scoreless streak and 13-inning hitless drought by breaking out for four two-out runs in the top of the fourth. Cooper (0-for-2, 2 BB, R) walked and Darin Mastroianni (1-for-4, R) singled off starter Lance Pendleton, who was lifted with one out. Kanekoa Texeira then surrendered a single to Brian Van Kirk (1-for-3, R), uncorked a wild pitch that plated Cooper with the first run, yielded a two-run single to Kervin (1-for-3, 2 RBI, R) and an RBI single to Donovan (2-for-3, BB, RBI, SB), allowing New Hampshire to grab a 4-2 lead.
Trenton struck back against Danny Farquhar in the home half of the sixth, plating a pair of runs to knot the score, 4-4. Matt Cusick (1-for-2, 2B, R, SAC) led off with a double, Eduardo Nunez (1-for-2, BB, R) walked and Noah Hall (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) grounded into a fielder's choice. On the play, Cusick scored on a throwing error by second baseman Brad Emaus. Malec (2-for-3, 2B, RBI) then slammed a double to the left-centerfield gap, bringing in Hall as the tying run.
The Thunder claimed their second consecutive walk-off victory over the Fisher Cats when Kyle Anson (0-for-2, BB) drew a leadoff walk from Tim Collins in the bottom of the seventh. Justin Snyder (0-for-2, SAC) sacrificed pinch-runner Francisco Santana to second, and Santana raced home with the winning run on Austin Krum's double to right, giving Trenton the 5-4 victory.
Wilkins Arias (5-3) struck out one in one shutout inning, allowing a hit and a walk in earning the victory.
Collins (1-2) took the loss after yielding a run on one hit and a walk, with one strikeout, in two-thirds of an inning.
In the bottom of the first, Hall lifted Kenny Rodriguez's 3-2 pitch over the wall in left-centerfield for a two-out, two-run home run, his third, to stake Trenton to a 2-0 lead.
