Fish Split Doubleheader with Owls
July 30, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release
LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. -- Two of the biggest games of the season for the Lexington County Blowfish came tonight from Lexington County Baseball Stadium in a twin bill against the Forest City Owls but all the Fish could do is muster a split in the double dip.
Game one featured a bit of everything and anything.
Lexington County fell behind early in the ballgame 5-1 after the Owls drew 6 walks through the first two innings and took full advantage of the Blowfish miscues.
The Blowfish began their slow climb back in Game 1 on an RBI double from Drew Ellis (The Citadel) in the first and also added three runs in the third to cut the lead to 1.
Forest City knocked in run in the fourth on the solo home run from Connor Grant (College of Charleston) to push their lead back to two runs.
However the Blowfish tied the game in fourth when Danny Edgeworth (Mercer) doubled home Chaz McCormick (Millersville) to cut the lead in half. The Fish added the second run on an RBI double from Grant Miller (Western Michigan).
The Blowfish took the lead in the fifth but surrendered a run in the sixth to knot the game back up at 7 a piece.
The Owls sprayed two runs across the board in the seventh on the two run single from Nick Tierno (Delaware) and the Fish appeared to be en route to another tough late inning loss.
But in the bottom of the seventh magic struck at the Lex.
The rally started on an Ellis single up the middle that was followed up by a two out single from Derek Olenchuk (Newberry), which put the Blowfish in business.
Adam Renwick (Clemson) singled into right field to continue to rally for Lexington County bringing in the run from third to cut the Owl lead to one.
Chris Singleton (Charleston Southern) walked to load the bases, and Brett Auckland (Presbyterian) flared a two run walk off single into left to seal the comeback for Lexington County winning the game 10-9.
Game two started out much better for the Fish.
Lexington County jumped out ahead early to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings of the ballgame.
Charlie Madden (Mercer) launched his first homer of the season in the second and Auckland and Singleton each doubled home runs in the first two innings of the game.
But Forest City clawed themselves back in the game and pulled their own magic on the Fish in Game 2.
The Owls cut the lead for Lexington County to three heading into the sixth inning when they unloaded for six runs in the top half of the inning to take a three run lead.
Five of the six runs in the sixth game via the home run; a three run bomb from Austin Dennis (Middle Tennessee State University) and a two run shot from Diaz Nardo (Delaware) facilitated the big sixth for the Owls.
The Fish expunged all of the magic in Game 1 and failed to make a comeback in the second game of the double dip. The split keeps the Fish three full games behind Forest City for the fourth spot in the CPL Western Division standings with just six to play.
Lexington County comes back out to the Lex on Monday night for the start of a three game series against the Florence RedWolves. Coverage will begin on z93.1 FM The Lake at 6:50 and first pitch is slated for 7:05.
