Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - This past weekend's 1st annual Salmon Hunt was an overwhelming success! The Victoria Salmon Kings and the Salmon Kings Foundation presented the first prize cheque of $5,000 to local fisherman Shawn McDonald whose 36.9 lb. Spring was the large fish netted over the two days.
"The 1st annual Salmon Hunt was more popular that even we had hoped. More than 150 fishermen turned out to support the Salmon Kings Foundation and the Greater Vancouver Island Fish Hatcheries. Just as importantly this weekend has given us the framework to build the Salmon Hunt into a premiere community event for years to come," said Adam Olsen, Communications Coordinator with the Victoria Salmon Kings.
Saturday morning dawned with Vern Storry weighing in the first fish of the day at Pedder Bay Marina. His 33.1 lbs Chinook was good enough to hold on to 1st place throughout the day with no other fisherman able to break the 30 lb. barrier.
Sunday however, was a different story. Once again the first fish weighed in that morning was the one that finally snatched 1st prize from the jaws of Mr. Storry's Spring. Shawn McDonald's 36.9 lb. Spring was then able to fight to the finish and hold on to that $5,000 1st place cheque. Vern Storry's fish was still good enough to take the $2,000 cheque for 2nd place.
Bob Ross grabbed 3rd place with a Chinook weighing 29 lbs and took home a cheque worth $1,000.
While McDonald, Storry and Ross were the big winners on the weekend but the prizing didn't stop there. 25 prizes were distributed based on weight and an additional 36 door prizes, including a 4hp Mercury Outboard donated by the fine folks at Mercury Service, were also handed out at the wrap-up lunch held at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
"The response from the fishing community was fantastic. They' are their own community and the support they showed us (the Salmon Kings and the Salmon Kings Foundation) blew us away,' said Olsen. "This positive response also means we're already back at work for next the Salmon Kings Salmon Hunt which will take place next year, July 22nd and 23rd, 2005."
Details on the 2nd Annual Victoria Salmon Kings Salmon Hunt will be made available this fall after the kick-off of the Salmon Kings' 2005/06 season.
