NJ/NY Gotham FC News Release
HARRISON, NJ - For the second straight week, NJ/NY Gotham FC is the No. 1-ranked team in NWSL standings, and the club will host a star-studded matchup against the San Diego Wave this Sunday, June 4 (6. p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network), featuring U.S. Women's National Team players on both sides.
Through nine matches, Gotham FC remains first in the NWSL standings with 17 points while the San Diego Wave enter the match in a four-way tie for second with 16 points. Gotham FC and revamped roster will be seeking the club's first ever win against the Wave after falling in both matchups last season.
The highly anticipated contest, which will serve as Gotham FC's annual Pride Night celebration, will showcase current stars of the USWNT. Gotham FC starting midfielder Kristie Mewis, defender Kelley O'Hara, and forward Lynn Williams - who is tied for the NWSL lead in goals with five - will host Team USA teammates Naomi Grima (defender), Alex Morgan (forward) and Taylor Kornieck (midfielder).
The match is Gotham FC's first at home since May 14 and its first against the San Diego Wave this season. It follows a two-game road trip for Gotham FC that resulted in a 4-1 win against OL Reign on May 21 and a 1-1 tie against the Washington Spirit on May 28.
Both matches highlighted the skill-level of Gotham FC's younger players. NWSL rookie Jenna Nighswonger (midfielder) scored her second career goal against OL Reign while 20-year-old Brazilian National Team player Bruninha (defender) scored in each match. Bruninha's performance against the Washington Spirit on May 28 earned her NWSL Player of the Week honors.
Gotham FC will return home on Sunday to an unprecedent Red Bull Arena crowd, with the club setting a franchise sales record of more than 13,000 tickets sold. The club's next home game follows shortly after with a UKG Challenge Cup match against the Orlando Pride at 7:30 p.m. EST on Wednesday, June 7.
