New Britain Bees News Release

(Waldorf, MD) - The New Britain Bees (23-21) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (15-31) 4-2 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Tuesday evening to register their first win in the five-game series between inter-division foes.

New Britain starting pitcher Kyle Simon (1-3) was victorious after allowing two runs on 11 hits (one home run) in eight innings pitched while striking out three batters. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Brett Lee (0-3) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs on three hits (one home run) in just two innings of work, walking three, hitting a batter and throwing a wild pitch. Jim Fuller closed the ballgame out in the bottom half of the ninth inning to notch his fourth save of the season, tying him with Jose Rosario for the club-lead.

New Britain quickly jumped out 3-0 versus Lee just five batters into the contest when Taylor Motter blasted a three-run home run to left field, his third big fly of the campaign. The Bees took a 4-1 advantage in the top of the third thanks to a Jonathan Galvez run-scoring base knock that allowed Alejandro De Aza to cross the plate after he was plunked by Lee to begin the frame. The rest of the night belonged to Simon, as he made every big pitch necessary to record his first quality start in 2019, including inducing Joe Benson to bounce into a 4-6-3 (Motter to Alexi Amarista to Deibinson Romero) double play in the bottom of the eighth with runners at first and second and nobody out and Benson representing the tying-run. The twin-killing was New Britain's third on the night, giving them 48 overall which this them with the Blue Crabs for the second most in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. A Cory Vaughn solo home run to left (his third roundtripper of the series) to open up the bottom of the ninth for Southern Maryland got the home team to within 4-2, but Fuller relieved Simon and retired all three batters he faced, striking out two in the process, including Jon Griffin swinging to end the ballgame as the boys from the Hardware City picked up a much-needed road victory. Eight different players each had one in the triumph for New Britain.

The Bees return to New Britain Stadium on Tuesday, June 18th when they welcome in the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to begin a three-game midweek series and six-game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. It will be another Two-fer Tuesday in the Hardware City, as fans will have the opportunity to buy one ticket, and get one FREE when purchasing online, over the phone, or at the Bees Ticket Office!
