
First Inning Dooms Bombers in Matinee

The Bombers dropped their second straight game to start the season, falling to the Madison Mallards 10-5 in a late morning game in Battle Creek.
Bombers starting pitcher Scott Sency struggled in his debut outing for 2016. He picthed one inning, but alowed five runs on five hits, including a home run by Madison left fielder Zach Jarrett. In his one inning, he allowed one walk but also recorded one strikeout.
The Bombers bats were late to the game today. Second baseman Christian Helzel was the only Bomber to get a hit in his frist at bat in the game.
Josh Prater came on in relief for the Bombers and went three innings for Battle Creek. He allowed three runs in his outing and then was relieved by Kaleb McCurry, who allowed one run in two innings.
The Bombers started tallying hits and runs in the fourth when Cooper Marshall led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a Nick Walker single. In the fifth inning, the Bombers showed their power when right fielder Eric Gilgenbach hit a one out solo home run over the left field wall for the first Bombers home run of the young season.
The Bombers batters were cutting at the defecit in the game, but the Mallards kept scoring with single runs in the sixth and ninth innings.Â
The Bombers put up a ninth inning rally. Christian Helsel and Eric Gilgenbach were both hit by a pitch with one out and came around to score on a Nick Podkul single. Podkul eventually scored the final run of the game, but Ryan Dorrow grounded out to shortstop to end the game, with Madison winning 10-5.
The Bombers play again tomorrow night agaist the I-94 rival Kalamazoo Growlers at 7:05 at C.O. Brown Stadium.
