Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

Moose Jaw, SK - Jagger Firkus, Denton Mateychuk and Brayden Yager have received the call from Hockey Canada.

The trio of Moose Jaw Warriors were among the 30 players invited to attend Canada's National Junior Team Selection Camp for the 2024 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, which will be hosted in Gothenburg, Sweden.

"This is a big moment for these three players, the Warriors' organization and the City of Moose Jaw," Warriors general manager Jason Ripplinger said.

Moose Jaw leads the Western Hockey League with three players invited to the camp. This is the first time in Warriors' history that three of the team's players have been invited to the Canada's NJT Selection Camp.

The Warriors have had two players on Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championship on two occasions in 1987 (Theoren Fleury and Mike Keane) and 2002 (Nathan Paetsch and Brian Sutherby).

"These players have grown up and developed in the Warriors' organization under Head Coach Mark O'Leary," Ripplinger said. "Brayden, Denton and Jagger have worked hard to earn an opportunity to represent Canada at the World Juniors."

Firkus leads the Warriors in scoring this season with 24 goals and 49 points in 26 games. He's third in the Western Hockey League in both categories.

Mateychuk previously won gold with Canada at the 2021 World Under-18 Hockey Championship.

Yager has 17 goals and 39 points in 25 games this season with the Warriors after being taken with the 14th overall pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins in this summer's NHL Draft.

He was selected by the Warriors with the third overall pick in the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft.

The Saskatoon, SK forward represented Canada at the 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, finishing with five goals and nine points in five games while helping Canada to the gold medal.
