Charlotte Knights News Release
FORT MILL, S.C. - The Charlotte Knights couldn't wait for the post-game fireworks extravaganza and put 8 runs on the scoreboard early to defeat Durham 11-2 in front of 15,020 fans on the Fourth of July.
The fireworks began in the bottom of the 2nd, when Daryle Ward scored on a bases loaded walk. Eider Torres then cleared the bases with a 3-run RBI single to right field, giving the Knights a 4-0 lead. The next batter, Carlos Quentin on rehab from Chicago, singled to center scoring Torres increasing the lead to 5-0. Three batters later-with the bases loaded again-Wilson Betemit hit a sharp ground ball to left field to clear the bases and making the score 8-0.
Knights catcher Cole Armstrong was a major offensive force himself hitting two solo home runs in the bottom of the 5th and 7th. Armstrong went 3-4 on the night.
Charlotte's All-Star pitcher Carlos Torres (8-4, 2.30) picked up his eighth win of the season and struck out nine Bulls on the night. He now has 93 strikeouts which leads the International League. Durham's Matt Desalvo (0-2, 5.20) took the loss for the Bulls.
