LAST TIME OUT: Columbia dropped the series finale to Hickory, 8-3, on Sunday evening. Ronny Mauricio and Hayden Senger both went 2-for-4 at the plate. Mauricio now has a team-best 20 multi-hit games.
FLIP THE CALENDAR: Columbia finished the month of June with a 9-14 mark. The club hit .238, its best average for any month this season. Three Fireflies impressed at the plate in June:
- H. Senger - team-best .345 average, 5 straight multi-hit games: 6/22-6/26
- R. Mauricio - .295 average in 20 games, team-best 26 hits
- M. Vientos - led the team with 15 RBIs in June (20 GP), .263 average
Simeon Woods-Richardson was the most impressive starter in the month of June: 2.38 ERA, 5 GS, 1-2 record, 29 K, 22.2 IP, 6 BB
MAURICIO MAGIC: Among current and qualified South Atlantic League hitters, Ronny Mauricio is third in the league with 82 hits and eighth with a .286 average. The South Atlantic League All-Star is hitting .314 (32-for-102) in 23 games since May 28, which is third-best in the SAL among qualified hitters.
SECOND-HALF SLUGGERS: Best batting averages in the second half:
1. Hayden Senger - .444 (16-for-36), 10 GP, 4 R, 7 2B, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 3 BB, 4 K
2. Wagner Lagrange - .316 (12-for-38), 10 GP, 6 R, 3 2B, 8 RBI
3. Mark Vientos - .297 (11-for-37) 9 GP, 5 2B, 1 HR, 9 RBI
NEAR NO-NO: Friday was the second one-hit shutout in franchise history and the first since July 16, 2016. Thomas Szapucki and Tylor Megill carried a no-hitter into the ninth before the game's first hit (Billy Oxford finished the job on the mound for the Fireflies). Columbia nearly did something that had only happened once before in franchise history. The Fireflies no-hit the Charleston RiverDogs on April 9, 2016, which, ironically enough, was the franchise's first win. That evening, Thomas McIlraith (6 IP), Alex Palsha (2 IP) and Johnny Magliozzi (1 IP) combined to no-hit the RiverDogs at Joe Riley Park.
NUMBER RETIREMENT: The Fireflies retired Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby and Frank Robinson's numbers on Saturday at Segra Park. The three numbers were unveiled just beyond the centerfield wall. Jackie Robinson became the first African-American to play Major League Baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 while Doby, a Camden, South Carolina, native, became the first to play in the American League (with the Cleveland Indians in July 1947). Frank Robinson, the first African-American manager in MLB history, played for the minor league Columbia Reds in 1954 and 1955. All three are members of Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame.
