Columbia Fireflies News Release
AUGUSTA, SC - The Fireflies used some late offense to force extra innings, but couldn't take home the win, falling 5-4 in 10 innings to the Augusta GreenJackets at SRP Park Saturday evening.
It didn't take long for the GreenJackets (2-0) to score in the bottom of the 10th. With Alexander Martinez placed at second, Cam Magee singled on the third pitch of the inning from Doug Kirkland (L, 0-1) to grant Augusta a walk-off win.
The Fireflies (0-2) were set down in order with three Reibyn Corona (W, 1-0) punchouts in the top of the 10th inning.
Columbia tied the game with two outs in the eighth inning. With Derlin Figueroa on second, Jhonny Perdomo laced a double up the gut. Figueroa hustled around to make the score 4-4. The hit was Perdomo's second RBI knock of the season and this time, it was good enough to force extra innings.
The Fireflies took an early lead Saturday. Daniel Vazquez singled to start the contest and then Blake Mitchell clubbed a 2-0 pitch off the wall in right-center for a RBI double to break the scoreless tie. Mitchell advanced on a balk from GreenJackets starter Adam Maier before scoring on a ground out from Austin Charles.
The Fireflies again took the lead in the top of the fifth. Milo Rushford led the frame off with a triple to the right field corner. Next, Seth Keller walked the bases loaded for Charles to ground out, allowing Rushford to score and grant Columbia a 3-2 lead.
The GreenJackets were able to manufacture a pair of runs off Emmanuel Reyes. Luis Sanchez singled to lead-off the second before advancing to third on a throwing error from backstop Dionmy Salon. He scored on a Kade Kern sacrifice fly to right to cut Columbia's lead to one. The next frame, Diego Benitez hit a base knock to plate Jace Grady and tie the game 2-2.
The GreenJackets rallied again in the bottom of the fifth. Cam Magee singled to start off the frame before Pier Oliver-Boucher banged a triple off the center field wall to tie the game. Oliver-Boucher scored off a Isaiah Drake sacrifice fly to center to push the GreenJackets in front 4-3.
Reyes closed the game out with five innings of work. He allowed four runs, three of which were earned before handing the ball to the bullpen. Jarold Rosado threw a scoreless sixth while fanning three hitters in his Fireflies debut. Next, Chase Isbell worked a pair of hitless innings to give the bats a chance to get back to even.
Columbia closes out their series with the GreenJackets tomorrow night at SRP Park at 5:05 pm. The Fireflies trot out RHP Felix Arronde for the start and Augusta counters with southpaw Mitch Ferris.
The Fireflies 2024 season begins Tuesday, April 9 against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at 7:05 pm. Tickets for the season are on sale now. Go to ColumbiaFireflies.com for more information about promotions and ticket pricing for this summer.
