Florida Firecats News Release

The Florida Firecat defense dominated early and late, allowing the offense to take over the game in the fourth quarter as Florida defeated the Daytona Beach ThunderBirds 41-15 Saturday night before 4,021 at Germain Arena.

Both teams struggled to put points on the board in the first half as Florida went to the locker room with a 13-6 lead.

In the second half, the Firecats offense heated up as Chris Wallace threw three touchdown passes to three different receivers. From there, it was all about the Florida defense. Linebacker Larry Edwards sacked ThunderBirds quarterback Matt Bohnet in the endzone for a safety. And Defensive Back Tony Stubbs capped off the scoring by recovering a fumble in the endzone for a touchdown. Defensive End Terrance Chapman caused the fumble by sacking Daytona Beach back-up quarterback Steven Moffett in the endzone.

Rookie receiver James Panui led the Firecats in receiving for the second week in a row, catching 7 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. Patrick Rouzard led Daytona Beach in receiving, catching 7 passes for 67 yards.

Chris Wallace finished the night 19-33 for 185 yards and four touchdowns. He also threw two interceptions. Bohnet finished 17-32 for 185 yards and one touchdown. He threw one interception.

Perhaps no stat sums up the sloppy style displayed in this game better than this: Daytona Beach committed 24 penalties on the night, setting a new single game af2 record. The penalties added up to an astounding 181 yards, fourth most in league history.

With the win, Florida improves to 8-1 (5-1 in the South Division). The Firecats have a short week before traveling to take on the Manchester Wolves on Friday Night. The ThunderBirds fall to 2-8 (0-4 in the South Division). Daytona Beach will travel to Albany, GA Saturday night for a match-up with the South Georgia Wildcats.
