Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA (May 31, 2008)- The Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings ended the 17 game winning streak of the Tulsa Talons by defeating them 52-45 at the CenturyTel Center in Bossier City, La in front of 2,946 rowdy fans on Saturday night. The BattleWings improved to 4-5 on the season and regained control of the Southwest Division of the National Conference, and also wiped out a nine game losing streak to the Talons with the victory.
It looked like it was going to be a long night for the BattleWings as Tulsa quarterback Justin Allgood connected with WR Jeff Hughley on a 39 yard scoring strike on the first play from scrimmage, but the BattleWings defense clamped down on the prolific offense and only allowed 10 more points in the first half. The BattleWings' offense did their part in the first half, scoring 31 points on three touchdown passes from Gary Cooper to TE Greg Hodges, and WR's Kenneth R. Williams and PJ Winston. BattleWings' LB Marvin Byrdsong recovered a fumble for a touchdown and K David Carlton added a late FG for a 31-17 halftime lead.
The BattleWings started the third quarter in grand fashion as WR Chavis McCollister scrambled for a 33 yard rushing score and increased the BattleWing lead to twenty-one points. McCollister also added a 33 yard touchdown reception in the 3rd after Talons QB Justin Allgood connected with WR Chris Maddox on a 4 yard scoring strike.
The defending Arena Cup champions roared back in the 4th quarter to take 45-44 lead as WR/DB Jermaine Hope caught a 39 yard touchdown pass and returned a Gary Cooper interception 22 yards for a touchdown. With 45 seconds remaining in the game, BattleWings FB Jason Schule rumbled down the right side of the field or a 20 yard touchdown run to give the BattleWings a 50-45 lead. The ensuing two-point conversion was good as WR Kenneth R. Williams made a highlight reel catch in the right corner of the end zone to give the BattleWings a 7 point lead. The Talons, with no timeouts, were unable to get in the end zone for the tying points as the clock ran out.
