Firebirds Release 16-Game Schedule

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - The Indiana Firebirds of the Arena Football League have announced their 2003 16-game regular season schedule. This will be the first time in league history that a 16-game schedule will be in place.
The Firebirds kick off the regular season on Sunday, February 2nd when they face their former divisional rival the Detroit Fury. With the Fury departure from the Central Division, the make-up of the division will consist of the Chicago Rush, the Grand Rapids Rampage and newcomer the Dallas Desperados. The Firebirds will play a home and away series against each of their division rivals including their home opener on Sunday, February, 16th against the Rush live on NBC sports.
The following two weeks, the Birds will host two non-divisional opponents. The first will bring the ArenaBowl XVI runner-up Arizona Rattlers to Indianapolis followed the weekend after by the Colorado Crush. The Crush, the AFL's newest franchise, is owned by legendary quarterback John Elway, who has teamed with Kroenke Sports Enterprises and Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen to bring Arena Football to Colorado. Elway will serve as the team's President and CEO.
Other non-division marquee opponents slated for the upcoming season are the 2002 ArenaBowl Champion San Jose SaberCats and the Los Angeles Avengers. Match-ups against New York, Orlando, Tampa Bay, Buffalo and Georgia make up the remainder of the Firebirds regular season schedule.
The Firebirds eight game home schedule at Conseco Fieldhouse will feature seven Sunday afternoon games and one Saturday night contest.
The 2003 season marks the historical debut of the AFL on NBC. The network will broadcast 71 games next season, including all playoff games and ArenaBowl XVII on June 22.
