AFL I Arena Football League (1987-2008)

Up to 70 Games to Air on NBC

October 10, 2002 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release

NEW YORK – Up to 70 games on NBC, flexible scheduling, a new start date, 16 weeks of games and realigned divisions highlight the Arena Football League's 17th regular-season schedule, which kicks off the first weekend of February.

The 2003 season begins the weekend of February 1-2 and culminates with ArenaBowl XVII on June 22 as a result of an innovative network-television agreement reached last March with NBC. The League had traditionally begun in April and culminated in August. Also as a result of the agreement, the League extended the regular-season schedule from 14 games to 16 and realigned its divisions.

NBC will broadcast up to four AFL games on a regional basis each regular-season Sunday (except March 30) plus all playoff games for a possible total of 70 contests, which would be the second-most games on network television of any sports league behind only the NFL.

Flexible scheduling opportunities also exist during a number of weeks throughout the season to allow the most compelling matchups in the most exciting arenas to be broadcast on NBC.

"What gets me so excited about the 2003 season is that our fans will be able to see more Arena Football League games than ever before because of our NBC agreement," said Commissioner David Baker. "NBC will also expose our great game to a new audience for the first time. With NBC, the addition of the Colorado Crush and 16 regular-season games, we expect 2003 to be the most exhilarating season in AFL history."

NBC's coverage begins on Sunday, February 2 with four games: the ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats travel to Arizona to face the Rattlers in a rematch of last year's title game; the expansion Colorado Crush, co-owned by former NFL quarterback JOHN ELWAY, make their AFL debut by hosting the Georgia Force; the Chicago Rush host the Orlando Predators in a battle of 2002 semifinal teams; and the second-year Dallas Desperados, owned by JERRY JONES SR., host the New York Dragons.

Two additional games will be played that Sunday. The Los Angeles Avengers host the New Jersey Gladiators in a battle of 2002 playoff teams, and new Detroit head coach AL LUGINBILL makes his AFL debut when the Fury host the Indiana Firebirds.

The 2003 season kicks off Saturday, February 1 at 7 p.m. (ET) when the Buffalo Destroyers host the Grand Rapids Rampage. Later that night, a pair of 2002 quarterfinal participants compete when the Tampa Bay Storm host the Carolina Cobras.

WEEK 1 MATCHUPS (* NBC games in bold; All times ET)

NBC will broadcast all playoff games beginning with the Wild Card Round on Saturday and Sunday, May 24-25. The Quarterfinal Round will take place on May 31-June 1, while the Semifinal Round will be held June 7-8. ArenaBowl XVII is scheduled for Sunday, June 22. This marks the first time in AFL history that a bye week rests between the Semifinal Round and the ArenaBowl, which is played at the city of the highest-remaining-seeded team.

The addition of the expansion Colorado Crush and the loss of the Toronto Phantoms necessitated realignment for the 2003 season. In the realigned divisions, Toronto is replaced in the Eastern Division with the Detroit Fury. The Dallas Desperados move from the Western Division to the Central and the expansion Colorado Crush are placed in the Western Division. The Southern Division remains intact, although the Carolina Cobras relocated from Raleigh to Charlotte. Each team plays its division opponents twice. The realigned AFL:
