February 24, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks and Fayetteville FireAntz battled to the bitter end Friday night in North Carolina, but it was the FireAntz who came out on top defeating the Augusta RiverHawks 5-4 in overtime. Forward Josh McQuade scored his second goal of the game just 2:06 into the extra frame to give his team the victory.
The back-and-forth affair ended in just the third win in ten games between the two teams this season. The FireAntz continued a modest surge since Head Coach Todd Bidner took over the FireAntz a couple of weeks ago.
McQuade continued a fine season for the last-place FireAntz, has he also scored a short-handed goal in the third period and contributed an assist on a Rob Sich goal in the second. Sich also had a two-goal night as he scored the FireAntz' first goal of the game in the first period.
The RiverHawks' offense was spread out in the game, but defenseman Drew Baker was the most active player. He picked up a goal and an assist while logging 12 penalty minutes. In the second period he was assigned a two-minute minor penalty for roughing, and was tagged with a 10-minute misconduct for inciting the opponent.
RiverHawks' forward Jim Gehring regained the SPHL's lead in goals scored when he sent the game into overtime with his 36th goal of the season with less than two minutes remaining in the game. Other goal scorers for the RiverHawks included Jason Price and Justin Levac. The goal was Levac's first since joining the RiverHawks from the Federal Hockey League.
The point in the standings the RiverHawks get for the overtime defeat keeps them seven points up on the second-place Columbus Cottonmouths, and eight points up on the third place Knoxville Ice Bears. The win slides the FireAntz to within four points of the Mississippi RiverKings and the final playoff spot, however the RiverKings have five games in-hand.
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Thursday, March 1st as they face the FireAntz. The game is the last Bucks, Pucks, and Brews dollar draft night of the season. The puck drops at 7:35pm .Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office. Additional information on the Team, tickets, and schedule are available on the RiverHawks' home on the web, www.augustariverhawks.com or by calling 706-993-2645.
