Chicago Bandits News Release
ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Chicago Bandits have announced today that Caitlyn Adams, a senior at Cary-Grove High School and Karlyn Manley, a junior at Regina Dominican, have been the named the weekly winners of the TransNational Scholar Athlete of the Week. Both are now eligible to win the 1,000 scholarship that will be presented in June.
Adams was selected not only for her performance on the field, but her work in her community as well.
When she's not playing softball, she spends her time studying AP Physics and Honors Pre-Calculus while getting ready to attend Carroll University this fall.
"Caitlyn is very humble, extremely hard working," said Cary-Grove Varsity Coach Tammy Olsen. "She is a selfless player who leads by example.
"She has the ability to play a variety of different positions whether it's pitching, third or short stop"
The week of her selection, Adams was batting .500 with eight hits, three runs scored and one RBI.
Manley was selected because of her spectacular performance on and off the field.
She devotes her time off the field to helping at the Portage Park Animal Hospital.
"Karlyn balances her athletic and academic schedule very well," said Regina Dominican head coach Vince Smart. "The season in particular, she has spent time with our young players helping them improve their game.
"She is one of the most modest kids I have met. She wants to be the best but doesn't want the recognition."
At the time of her selection, Manley had recorded a .478 batting average 11 hits with six runs scored including seven RBIs with an ERA of 1.06 and 10 strikeouts.
The scholarship recipient will be recognized on the field prior to the Bandits vs. Akron Racers game on Saturday, June 6.
The Scholar Athlete of the Week program will run during the course of the 2015 high school season and will provide an opportunity for a student to win a $1,000 scholarship courtesy of TransNational.
