Final Patriots Cuts Announced

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C., November 13, 2002 – The Patriots trimmed their roster to the mandatory 10 count late Wednesday by releasing forwards Greg Stempin and Fred Williams and centers Darrell Johns and Kris Hunter.

Stempin and Johns were holdovers from last yearÂ’s inaugural season. Stempin led the Patriots in scoring last season at 15.7 per game. Johns averaged 5.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

The Patriots still have four players on their roster from last season, including the backcourt tandem of Terrell McIntyre and Omar Cook. Cook led the league in assists last season while McIntyre was third. McIntyre was also fifth in the league in scoring, second in free throw shooting and third in steals.

Frontcourt players Jeff Aubry and Jameel Watkins also return to the lineup. Aubry owns the team record for rebounds in a game with 16. Watkins owns the record for rebounds at the Crown Coliseum with 14.

Jason Capel is the PatriotsÂ’ mandatory allocated player. Capel has averaged 9.5 points on 7-for-12 shooting in the preseason. Rounding out the Patriots roster is 6-7 forward Matt Barnes out of UCLA, 6-11 center Marc Mazur out of Detroit University, 6-7 forward Bryan Lucas out North Texas, 6-6 point guard Richie Dalmau out of Puerto Rico and 6-3 guard Junie Sanders out Central Oklahoma.

Sanders earned a training camp spot by being chosen from 115 players at the Patriots free agent camp at Pinecrest. He has never averaged fewer than 17.0 points per game in his pro career.

The Patriots open their season Friday night at the Crown Coliseum against the Asheville Altitude. Game time is 7:30 p.m. The first 2,500 fans through the door get a free Patriots T-Shirt. Tickets range from $6-$21.
