Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - The ray of hope shone through for a moment, as the Dubuque Fighting Saints got a late goal to cut the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders' lead in half. However, Riders goaltender Bruno Bruveris denied a late Tristan Lemyre breakaway in the midnight hour, and the visitors came away with the 2-1 victory at the Mystique Community Ice Center on Friday night.
Cedar Rapids got two goals in the third period, and rode that to the win. Their first, a power play goal, came early in the frame. At 3:37, Brendan Fitzgerald threaded a shot from the point that was tipped in by Andy Moore to open the scoring. Then, four minutes later, Nate Hanley took advantage of a giveaway at the blue line, and roofed a shot over goaltender Philip Svedebäck's shoulder to double the lead.
Primo Self responded for the Fighting Saints with his third goal of the preseason. On a reload in the defensive zone, Self took off down the left wing, slipped by a defender, and cut to the net for the tally. He has scored a goal in every preseason game to this point. The goal came at 15:56, and led to the Saints pulling Svedebäck for the extra attacker, but Bruveris held the fort for Cedar Rapids.
It was his 33 saves on the night that carried the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on the night.
The Saints utilized their patented puck pressure to outshoot the Riders 16-3 in the first period. Cedar Rapids' first two shots came within the first 12 seconds, as Svedebäck was forced to make two big saves off the bat, and Dubuque had the territorial advantage for the rest of the first period.
Svedebäck finished the game with 17 saves.
It was a testy game that featured 32 minutes in penalties, and one power play goal. The Saints outshot the Riders 34-19 for the game. The two teams will reconvene for the preseason finale at the Mystique Community Ice Center on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
