Fielders Drop Game Three 4-1 to Flyers

ZION, Ill. - The Lake County Fielders (37-49) dropped game three 3-1 against the Schaumburg Flyers (33-52) on Saturday night.

The Flyers plated one in their first at bat after Travis Brown doubled and came around on a Garry Bakker wild pitch.

Schaumburg added another run in the fifth after Tom Fitzgerald led off with a single and advanced on Bakker balk. Bakker struck out the next two batters, but was unable to keep the ball in the strike zone walking the next three batters and plating Fitzgerald from third.

The Fielders rattled Alain Quijano's rhythm in their half of the sixth, plating one run off two consecutive hits. Kevin Haas lead off with a double and was brought round on a RBI single off the bat of Guillermo Martinez. Juan Valdes hit into a 5-4-3 double play and Kyle Higgins struck out to end the inning.

The Flyers chased Bakker (5-8) in the seventh after he issued a season high nine walks. Brandon Newton drew a lead off walk off Bakker, Travis Brown singled, and Kit Pellow was walked to load the bases bringing Alex Smith in from the bullpen. Smith got Mario Delgado to hit into a 6-4-3 double play; Newton scored on the play, but Smith was able to retire Richard Mercado to end the inning.

Bakker threw for six innings, giving up five hits three runs (all earned) while striking out three. Alex Smith and David Wasylak came in for relief of the pitcher and gave up only one hit in three combined innings pitched.

Brian McCullough came in relief of Quijano (5-7) in the bottom of the eighth and only gave up one hit to preserve the Flyers 3-0 victory.

Quijano went seven and one third innings, giving up three hits one run and striking out six in his fifth win of the season.

The two teams wrap up the series tomorrow at 1:00pm on Lindenhurst Health and Fitness Family Day. The Fielders will send Ryan Bicondoa (2-8) to the mound opposite Brett Harker (6-8).
