INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Fever defeated the Dallas Wings, 90-83, on Saturday afternoon at Gainbridge Fieldhouse to end the 2023 preseason schedule at 1-1.
Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell and forward NaLyssa Smith guided Indiana to the win with 29 and 22 points each. In the first half, Smith shot 5-of-7 from the floor and ended the first 20-minute session with 16 points, while Mitchell kept pace with 13 points as well and a 3-of-5 shooting clip from beyond the arc.
The first quarter consisted of an even fight between the two teams, but the Wings maintained its lead throughout the quarter, as it ended at 24-21. Despite a 9-3 run to begin the second quarter for Dallas, Mitchell would go on to score 11 of her 13 first-half points in the second quarter alone. Dallas went into the half with a 48-47 advantage after a buzzer-beater from Wings guard Arike Ogunbowale fell from the left wing. Ogunbowale led Dallas in the first 20 minutes with 13 points.
The second half belonged to Mitchell and the Fever as the sixth-year guard matched Smith with a 16-point half to close out Dallas by shooting 5-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Indiana extended its lead throughout the fourth quarter, including a 13-4 run midway through the fourth quarter with their biggest lead of the day getting to 12 with 3:36 remaining. Dallas reduced the deficit to 81-78 with more than two minutes remaining, but made only one more field goal to end the game before the final horn sounded in the Fever win.
Fever guard Erica Wheeler contributed 10 points, six rebounds and five assists after not playing in the first preseason game of the season last weekend. Queen Egbo came off the bench for Indiana and tied a game-high nine rebounds to go along with nine points.
