Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - TinCaps catcher Juan Fernandez extended his on-base streak to 21 games on Tuesday night at Parkview Field, but Fort Wayne fell, 4-1, against the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers). Fernandez has reached base in every game he has recorded a plate appearance this season.
West Michigan (20-17) took the lead in the top of the second inning. With Colby Bortles at second after a walk and a stolen base, Garrett McCain collected an RBI single on a line drive to center field to put the Whitecaps up, 1-0.
Fort Wayne (15-22) responded in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game. Designated hitter Luis Campusano hit a long sacrifice fly out to the left-field wall to score center fielder Jeisson Rosario and tie the game at 1-1.
The Whitecaps again took the edge in the top of the seventh inning. McCain recorded his second and third RBIs of the night, driving in Dylan Rosa and Bortles with a line drive to center field to give West Michigan a 3-1 advantage. Later in the inning, Alexis Garcia singled to bring in McCain and take a 4-1 lead that would hold for the remainder of the game.
Right fielder Tirso Ornelas and third baseman Justin Lopez both finished with two hits on the night to lead the TinCaps offensively.
Starting pitcher Osvaldo Hernandez also put up a solid outing going five innings, allowing only two hits and one run while striking out four on his 20th birthday.
