Ferguson Homers; Drive Fall 4-1 to 'Hoppers

April 24, 2023 - South Atlantic League (SAL)
Greenville Drive News Release

Greensboro Grasshoppers' (11-4) pitching kept Greenville Drive (5-9) batters quiet in the series finale in Greensboro, allowing only one run and two hits, to secure a series victory, 2-1. The Drive's sole run came off the bat of Max Ferguson, who sent his first homer of the year to deep right center in the top of the fourth.

Grasshoppers' starter Po-Yu Chen was strong throughout his five innings of work, allowing only two hits - the Ferguson home run, and a Blaze Jordan single in the fourth inning. He'd strikeout the side in the second and fight innings, stifling a Drive offense that put 13 runs on the board the night before.

Drive starter Isaac Coffey dealt six innings on the day, giving up just two runs on four hits while ringing up eight without relinquishing a walk. The two runs Coffey allowed came on two Jase Bowen home runs - one in the fourth and one in the sixth. Bowen's homers would account for the tying and go-head, and ultimately winning runs.

The Drive would get only one more opportunity to plate a runner, as catcher Jonathan DIaz reached in the sixth inning after he was hit by a pitch. He'd advance to second on a wild pitch but be picked off and caught stealing two batters later ending the Drive's threat.

With Greenville down 2-1, Drive reliever Nate Telliier came on in relief of Coffey in the seventh, but he'd only get through two outs before being relieved as the Grasshoppers loaded the bases on two walks and a single. A fielding error by Chase Meidroth during the ensuing at-bat would plate Hudson Head to increase the 'Hoppers lead to 3-1. Joe Jones would secure the inning's final out for the Drive.

Jaret Godman relieved Jones in the eighth, giving up a lead-off double to Bowen. Bowen would swipe third and score on the steal attempt after a throwing error by Diaz to make it 4-1.

The Drive would go down in-order in the ninth, giving Greensboro the 4-1 victory.

The Drive (Boston Red Sox) are back in action at Fluor Field on April 25 to face the Hudson Valley Renegades (New York Yankees).
