FCE Match Preview vs. New York Cosmos
September 25, 2015 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton (6-4-4) continues to push for a North American Soccer League (NASL) post-season berth this weekend, hosting New York Cosmos (6-5-3) at Clarke Field on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2:00 p.m. MT. The Eddies will be looking to continue their impressive play of late that has resulted in a pair of back-to-back, clean sheet victories to place them two points out of fourth place in the league table.
Defensively, Edmonton has been lights out through the past three matches, conceding just a single goal in a 1-1 draw to Minnesota United FC, Sept. 6. They have not allowed a goal since then, shutting out Tampa Bay Rowdies by a 1-0 score before posting an impressive 2-0 performance on the road against Indy Eleven. The positives continued for the Eddies, with team assist leader and goal scoring co-leader Lance Laing returning to the score sheet last Saturday. The team has also received a pair of goals from striker Daryl Fordyce over the past three-games.
The Cosmos will be aiming to shake off a Tuesday, 4-1 loss to Fall Season leaders Ottawa Fury FC. The NASL's Spring Season champions currently lead the Combined Standings with 43 points and will be looking to avoid a third consecutive match without a victory. Leonardo Fernandes leads the squad in goals scored with seven, one ahead of teammate and world-renowned forward Raúl. The Real Madrid legend has put forth a solid inaugural NASL campaign since arriving in New York, totalling six goals and three assists in 23 appearances this year.
The two teams met once during the Spring Season, with the Cosmos earning a 4-2 victory at James M. Shuart Stadium in New York. Carlos Mendes earned a brace in the match, while Lucky Mkosana and Raúl also registered goals. Eddies striker Tomi Ameobi and midfielder Ritchie Jones potted goals for the visiting side. Sunday is the first of two meetings between the Eddies and Cosmos over the next three weeks, they conclude their season series back in New York on Oct. 11.
"Sunday is going to be an exciting fixture," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said. "You look at the schedule and you look to see when you are playing the Cosmos. It's similar to my playing days when we would play Rangers or Celtic in the Premier League, these would be the games that are always special occasions. The Cosmos are a terrific side...they will be looking to bounce back and we will have to be at our very best."
The Eddies continue their playoff push when they return home Sunday, Sept. 27 to host Spring Season champions New York Cosmos. Kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m. MT and the match will be streamed locally on CityTV. For the best deals on tickets, contact the FC Edmonton office at 780.700.2600.
