FC Dallas Begins Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Play Tonight

The I-35 rivalry returns, USOC-style, as FC Dallas opens Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play tonight against USL-side San Antonio FC at Toyota Field in San Antonio. FC Dallas returns to MLS play on Saturday, June 9 to host the Montreal Impact at Toyota Stadium.

Against San Antonio FC

FC Dallas has never faced the USL's San Antonio FC in an official competition. The two clubs played in each of the last two preseasons. In 2016, FCD beat SAFC 2-1 while the Dallas reserves lost to San Antonio 2-0 in the 2018 preseason. In 2014, FC Dallas beat the NASL's San Antonio Scorpions 2-0 in the fourth round of USOC play.

FC Dallas' Fourth Round History

FC Dallas has won in its last eight U.S. Open Cup fourth round matches dating back to August 6, 2003, going 6-0-2 during that span. FC Dallas advanced on penalty kicks in matches that were tied at the end of regulation in 2016 and 2006. In 2017, FC Dallas beat the Tulsa Roughnecks 2-1 in the fourth round of USOC play.

U.S. Open Cup History

Dallas is 33-17-6 in U.S. Open Cup play since 1996. FC Dallas won the tournament in 2016 and in 1997. Seven current FC Dallas players have scored in U.S. Open Cup play:

What Is The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup?

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the United States' oldest ongoing soccer competition. The tournament, which began in 1914, features 97 clubs from Major League Soccer's U.S. teams, the USL and amateur clubs that qualified in earlier rounds of the tournament. The champion earns a total of $300,000 in prize money and qualifies for the group stage of Concacaf Champions League.

About San Antonio FC

Tonight's match marks the first time SAFC has ever hosted an MLS team at Toyota Field. San Antonio FC advanced to the fourth round of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after defeating the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in the third round on penalty kicks at Toyota Field on May 23. San Antonio originally defeated the Midland Sockers FC 4-0 to advance past the second round of this year's tournament.

Tonight's match is just the second time San Antonio has faced an MLS team in the Open Cup. SAFC lost to the Houston Dynamo in the fourth round of the 2016 tournament.
