May 16, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Cincinnati News Release
CINCINNATI - FC Cincinnati will open Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup action this Wednesday (May 18) against Indy Eleven NPSL (National Premiere Soccer League) at Nippert Stadium with kick-off slated for 7:00 p.m.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is a single-elimination, 90-game tournament open to all soccer teams of any division.
The first round of the tournament, which opened May 11, begins with a 46-team field made up of 14 Open Division local qualifiers, 14 National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) teams and 18 Premier Development League (PDL) sides.
FC Cincinnati, a United Soccer League member, enters the U.S. Open Cup in the second round along with the following USL members: Arizona United, Louisville City FC, Sacramento Republic, Charleston Battery, Oklahoma City Energy, Saint Louis FC, Charlotte Independence, Orange County Blues, San Antonio FC, Colorado Springs Switchbacks, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, Tulsa Roughnecks, Richmond Kickers, Wilmington Hammerheads FC, Harrisburg City Islanders and Rochester Rhinos.
Fans interested in attending FCC's match against Indy Eleven on May 18 are encouraged to visit fccincinnati.com/tickets. Pricing and purchasing procedures for the club's Cup game will remain consistent with any regular-season USL contest at Nippert Stadium.
Indy Eleven NPSL, coached by John Simmonds, are playing their first season as the official lower-league affiliate of the North American Soccer League (NASL) club of the same name. From 2013-2015 they were known as the Indiana Fire NPSL and earned their place in the 2016 Open Cup after advancing to the NPSL National Semifinals in 2015. FCC met the Indy Eleven parent club in a friendly last March with the teams playing to a 1-1 tie.
Should FCC advance, the club's next scheduled game will be June 1 against Tampa Bay Rowdies in Florida with the time to be determined. Nine North American Soccer League (NASL) clubs will jump into the action in the third round followed by a fourth round that includes 17 Major League Soccer teams.
The fourth round will yield the Round of 16 participants, who will be divided geographically with the pairings in each group decided by a random draw.
The two winners in each group from the Round of 16 advance to the quarterfinals. Geography will continue to play a role in determining the pairings for the semifinals.
