FC Cincinnati Acquire Yerson Mosquera on Loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers FC
February 2, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - FC Cincinnati News Release
CINCINNATI - FC Cincinnati have acquired defender Yerson Mosquera (mos-CARE-uh) from Wolverhampton Wanderers FC of the English Premier League on loan, the club announced today. Mosquera, 21, joins Cincinnati through June 30, with an option to extend his loan to the end of the 2023 MLS season.
The Colombian center back joins the Orange and Blue from Wolves, where he has made four appearances for the Wanderers' U-21 squad in the Premier League 2 this season.
"Yerson is tremendously talented young player that has a real desire to defend," said Chris Albright, FC Cincinnati General Manager. "His size, pace and technical ability will be a great fit for our group, and we're delighted to welcome him to the club."
Mosquera signed with Wolves in June 2021 on a five-year deal from Atlético Nacional of Categoría Primera A, Colombia's top flight, and made his debut with the Wolves first team in the Carabao Cup Third Round against Tottenham Hotspur in September 2021. With Wolves U-21 squad in the 2021-22 season, he made five appearances, including scoring one goal on February 28, 2022 against Reading FC's U-21 side.
"I'm very excited to join FC Cincinnati," said Mosquera. "Thank you to Chris, Pat, and the staff for this opportunity. I look forward to meeting the fans and playing for them at TQL Stadium this season."
The center back arrived at Wolves after making his professional debut with Atlético Nacional in 2020, where he quickly became a standout for the Medellín-based backline. He made 27 total appearances over parts of two seasons, including seven appearances in the prestigious Copa Libertadores, South America's premier club football tournament organized by CONMEBOL, where he helped Los Verdolagas advance past the second and third rounds to reach the group stage.
Internationally, Mosquera has made four youth appearances with Colombia, including two with the Colombian U-20 National Team in friendlies against the Ecuadorian U-20 side in December 2020, where he faced off against new teammate Marco Angulo. Both Mosquera and Angulo played all 90 minutes in the two friendly matches held four days apart, with Mosquera scoring a header goal in the latter of the two matchups on Dec. 19, 2020 in Quito.
