Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - At some point, the Fayetteville SwampDogs will have to beat someone besides the Columbia Blowfish, but for now they'll take the wins any way they come. On Monday night, it came via the right arm of starter Derek Brooks.
Brooks (4-0) pitched a complete game, the first of the year for the SwampDogs, and Fayetteville (10-9) avoided falling below .500 for the first time all season with a 4-1 win over Columbia (5-14). Brooks allowed just five hits and no walks through seven innings, striking out three in the win.
After a 7-1 start, the SwampDogs are just 3-8 in their last 11 games, with all three wins coming against the Blowfish. The win keeps the SwampDogs tied with Morehead City for second place, one game behind the Florence RedWolves in the CPL South. Morehead City visits "The Swamp" for the final time in the first half of the season tomorrow night.
Playing just seven innings because of the continuation of a suspended game prior to the start, the SwampDogs jumped on the board early. A pair of RBI singles by the Tampa duo of Eric Grabe and Cody Davis put Fayetteville up 2-0 on Columbia starter Josh Adams (0-3).
Dylan Brown then delivered the big blow, turning a 2-1 lead into a 4-1 cushion with a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the fourth that scored Nick Crucet and Billy Urban.
The win snaps a four-game skid for the SwampDogs, who lost the suspended game earlier in the night, 6-5. It was the third straight game in which the SwampDogs had lost by a run with the tying run in scoring position in the ninth inning.
Fayetteville's game with Morehead City on Tuesday is part of Spring Lake Chamber Night at J.P. Riddle Stadium. Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
Columbia - 0 0 0 / 1 0 0 / 0 / 1 5 3
Fayetteville - 2 0 0 / 2 0 0 / X / 4 7 0
