Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - A sacrifice fly in the top of the tenth inning broke a 2-2 tie, and the Fayetteville SwampDogs fell to the Florence RedWolves, 3-2 on Saturday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium. It's the third straight loss for the SwampDogs since opening the season 7-1.
The SwampDogs had a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases behind three walks. But Cody Davis lined softly to short on the first pitch from reliever Jacob Matthews (1-0) to end the threat.
With runners at first and third and one out in the top of the 10, Florence first baseman Travis Benn, who had homered earlier, delivered a shallow fly ball to left off SwampDogs reliever Mike Hebert (0-1). Dylan Brown made the catch, but his throw was too far left of the plate to catch Adam Engel tagging from third with what proved to be the winning run.
Fayetteville (7-4) managed just two hits off of RedWolves starter Adam Camara, who threw six innings and allowed both SwampDogs runs. He did walk five and hit a batter, but the âDogs could not covert the free passes into runs.
Brandon Browne started for Fayetteville and allowed two runs on three hits and five walks, and did not factor in the decision. Cory Kent threw two scoreless innings, and Hebert - in his first appearance as a SwampDog - pitched a perfect ninth before surrendering the run in the tenth.
In all, the game featured just seven hits but 18 walks and five hit batsmen. The SwampDogs had their baserunners, but could not deliver the big hit needed to push across more than two runs.
It's the third straight loss for Fayetteville, which now sits just a game and a half ahead of both Florence (6-6) and Morehead City, their next opponent. The SwampDogs will have the day off Sunday as they host the Fourth Annual Sandhills High School Senior Showcase. The team returns to action Monday night as they host the Marlins on 80's night at J.P. Riddle Stadium. Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
