Glens Falls Dragons News Release
The Glens Falls Dragons entered Sunday's matinee against the Utica Blue Sox on a two game winning streak, and were winners of three of their last four. Utica was having no part of the Dragon's recent success however as the Blue Sox scored six runs in the first three innings and went on to cruise past Glens Falls 8-3.
Utica wasted no time jumping in front. Franklin Jennings (Central Connecticut State) led off the game for the Blue Sox by reaching on an error. Jennings advanced to second on a wild pitch from Glens Falls starter Nick Powers (St. Josephs), and then advanced to third with a stolen base. After one batter was retired, Kyle Winkler (Miami) singled to left field, scoring Jennings to give Utica the 1--0 lead.
The Blue Sox extended their lead in the bottom of the second. Dylan Hutcheson (Texas A & M Corpus Christi) smacked a one out single. After a walk to Jared Baldinelli (St. Bonaventure), Jennings doubled over the left fielder's head to score Hutcheson to make it 2-1 Utica. It looked as if the Blue Sox may get two runs on the hit, but Baldinelli was cut down at the plate.
Utica used three consecutive hits to tack on more runs in the third. Winkler led off the frame with a single, and scored on a double from Anthony Young (Andrew College). Mitchell Clandra then singled to drive in Young to make it 4-0. The Blue Sox next would get back to back singles from Mason Fessler (Willamette) and Jack Goertzen (Shippensburg) to load the bases, then add on two more runs on a fielder's choice and an infield hit to give Utica the 6-0 edge.
Glens Falls got on the board against Utica starter Nolan Freeman (Mercyhurst North East) in the bottom of the fourth. Chris Kwitzer (U. Buffalo) and Alex Chandler (St. Rose) hit back to back doubles to make it 6-1. Chandler advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Dan Lowndes (Siena) to pull the Dragons within four. Glens Falls managed to cut the Utica lead in half before the frame was over as Lowndes stole second and scored on a single by Dan Carollo (Hartford) to close the margin to 6-3.
The Blue Sox got two runs back in the top of the eighth when Young reached on an error and came around to score on a triple by Clandra off Glens Falls reliever Ryan Cummings (St. Josephs). Fessler followed that up with a single to plate Clandra, making it 8-3.
Utica rounded out the scoring in the ninth when Hutcheson singled, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on an infield hit off the bat Jennings.
Utica pounded out 14 hits on the afternoon. Jennings finished 4 for 6 for the Blue Sox with a pair of RBIs. Winkler, Young and Fessler had two hits each.
Kwitzer, Lowndes and Chandler each had two safeties for the Dragons.
Freeman (3-0) earned the win for Utica. He went 7 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. Freeman struck out four and walked just one.
Powers (0-1) suffered the loss for Glens Falls.
The Dragons (5-15) return home Wednesday to meet the Saugerties Stallions. Game time at East Field is 7:00 P.M.
