Farinaro Fantastic as Spikes Take Down Crosscutters, 5-3

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Steven Farinaro hurled seven shutout innings and set a new career high with eight strikeouts as the State College Spikes raced to a big lead and hung on for a 5-3 victory on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

With the win, the Spikes (38-19) extended their lead over the Crosscutters (30-26) in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division to 7 1/2 games with 19 remaining for both teams. The Spikes' magic number to win the division title now sits at 13.

Farinaro (7-1) yielded just for hits and jumped back into a tie for the most wins in the league with his second victory over Williamsport in the space of three weeks. The right-hander how has allowed just one earned run over 13 innings against the Crosscutters this year for an ERA of 0.69.

The Spikes took the lead in the fifth with a trio of two-out runs, starting with Tommy Edman's infield single. Andy Young then tripled in Edman and scored himself on a Williamsport error.

In the seventh, State College extended the lead when Mick Fennell tripled in a run and Edman followed with an RBI double.

Williamsport put together three runs in the eighth with Darick Hall's bases-loaded, two-run single and a single from Luke Williams.

Spencer Trayner (3) recorded the final four outs, yielding one hit in the process, to close out the win or the Spikes and earn the save.

Crosscutters starter Bailey Falter (1-6) took the loss after allowing three runs, two of them earned, on six hits and a walk over five innings.

The series now shifts to BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field in Williamsport for the last two games, starting with a 7:05 p.m. contest on Thursday. State College will go with left-hander Dewin Perez (2-3) on the mound, while Williamsport will send NYPL All-Star right-hander Adonis Medina (4-2) to the hill. Medina allowed a season-high seven runs, three of them earned, over four innings in a loss to the Spikes on July 29.

Following the series against the Crosscutters, the Spikes will head to Ohio to take on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in a three-game series from Saturday through Monday before returning home on Tuesday for a three-game set against the Batavia Muckdogs.

Highlights of the trio of 7:05 p.m. games against the Muckdogs include Princess Night and Daddy-Daughter Date Night on a $2 Walking Taco Tuesday, presented by B94.5, as well as Half-Craft Wednesday, presented by 93.7 The BUS.

The homestand concludes with the return of Tim "Wild Thang" Lepard and Team GhostRiders for another Cowboy Monkey Rodeo on Thursday night. The one-of-kind act featuring monkeys riding dogs herding sheep will thrill fans of all ages, with the skies lighting up with a fantastic FIREWORKS show after the game. Fans of age can also enjoy $1 Beer Thursday, presented by BIG Froggy 101.
