Amarillo Dillas News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Dillas Baseball Club announced today that catcher Justin Wenger has voluntarily retired. The four-year veteran has seen the peaks and valleys of each season in his time with the Dillas, but his career is best remembered for making an indelible impact on the field and as a notable crowd favorite.
The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania native originally signed with Amarillo as an undrafted free agent July 7, 2006 after a successful collegiate career at Delaware State University. The fiery, durable back-stop had been a mainstay on the lineup card having worked behind the plate in 229 out of 240 games which equates to ninety-five percent of the catching duties, during his pro career.
The 2007 United League All Star career numbers include a .281 batting average to go with his 237 total hits, 38 doubles, 9 home runs, and 109 runs batted in. Despite the rigorous demands of playing in the Texas heat, Wenger managed to have nearly one hit in every game he appeared in for the Dillas.
"I cannot begin to describe the kind of player Justin (Wenger) has been over the last four years and particularly what he has meant to this team and organization", Dillas manager Brady Bogart said. "He showed up every day prepared to contribute leaving everything he had on the field. He was a special player and crowd favorite who will be missed by everyone, without question".
ULB Opening Day 2010 is Thursday, May 27 when the Dillas travel to San Angelo for a two-game series against the Colts. The reigning United League Champions will open their home schedule Saturday, May 29, when the Colts follow the Dillas back to Amarillo to play a four-game series. Season tickets are still available and single-game tickets officially go on-sale Saturday, May 1st.
