Falcons Week in Review
July 11, 2005 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Surprise Fightin' Falcons News Release
Monday
The Surprise Fightin' Falcons gave fans a Golden Baseball League first last week. The Falcons played the first "silent game" in GBL history on Independence Day.
Two hours before the first pitch of Monday's game against the San Diego Surf Dawgs, a fuse blew near the P.A. booth, cutting off power to the P.A. system, music system and air conditioning in the suites and press box level. So, the Falcons went old school and played the game with no electrical sound enhancements.
The technical difficulties did not dampen the fans' enthusiasm, however. The video board on Surprise Stadium's scoreboard kept fans up to date on the game's happenings, the firt 1,000 fans received bobbleheads of Rickey Henderson, and the postgame fireworks show was a big crowd pleaser to more than 3,200 fans who stayed after the game to watch the City of Surprise's fireworks show.
The Falcons lost the game however, falling 3-0 behind Don Graves' two-hit shutout. Surprise OF/INF Desi Wilson also saw his 30-game hitting streak snapped.
Tuesday
For the second straight night, the Falcons were handcuffed by another sterling pitching performance at Surprise Stadium as Adam Johnson pitched San Diego to a 4-2 victory.
Wednesday
Surprise brought out the big bats, but so did San Diego in a 14-9 Surf Dawgs win at Surprise Stadium. It was Surprise's seventh loss in a row and ninth in the last 10 games.
Thursday
The streak ended in dramatic fashion as the Falcons rallied for five run in the ninth to post a 14-13 victory at Surprise Stadium. The Falcons had been down 13-7 in the eighth before completing the miraculous rally.
Friday
Surprise made it two in a row, beating Japan 6-5 at Surprise Stadium. The Falcons built a 6-1 lead, then held on in the ninth to improve to 4-1 against the Samurai Bears this season.
Saturday
The Falcons won their third straight with a 7-2 win over Japan. Pete Hartmann struck out a season-high 14 batters in dominating the Bears.
Sunday
Surprise held leads three times but failed to pull off the three-game sweep of Japan, losing 8-6. The Bears scored two ninth inning runs on an error to win a see-saw battle at Surprise Stadium.
