Springfield Falcons News Release
Portland, ME â The Springfield Falcons fell to the Portland Pirates, 1-0, as forward Trent Whitfield scored the game's only goal during a third-period power play in front of 3,918 at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Sunday. Pirates goaltender Maxime Ouellet made 16 saves to register the shutout. Jean-Marc Pelletier turned aside 27 of 28 shots in the Falcons net. The Falcons have lost their last three games after going unbeaten in the team's previous four contests.
Springfield pressured for the tying goal after Pelletier was pulled for an extra skater in the closing minute. However, Oullet stopped a point blank shot by Falcons forward Frantisek Lukes and Fredrik Sjostrom hit the post as the club was not able to net the equalizer.
Whitfield's game-winner came with 12:42 remaining to play while Falcons center Chris Ferraro served a penalty for cross checking. The goal was just the Pirates' fifth power-play goal of the season.
The game marked the return of Chris Ferraro to Portland where he was a member of the Pirates the previous two seasons. His twin brother Peter did not skate in the game as a result of an injury he suffered versus the Wolf Pack in Hartford on Saturday evening. His status is day-to-day.
The Falcons record on the season dropped to 5-6-1 on the season. The club is currently in a three-way tie for fourth place in the AHL's Atlantic Division.
The Falcons will look to get back on the winning track in a road game versus the Lowell Lock Monsters on Tuesday afternoon. The voice of the Falcons, Marc Shelanski will describe the action live on The ZONE â Sports Radio 640. The pre-game show starts at 1:30 pm.
