The Springfield Falcons and Norfolk Admirals get together on Sunday afternoon for their first of four meetings this season. Norfolk returns to Springfield on Friday, November 16 before the Falcons head to Virginia Thanksgiving weekend, November 23-24, for a pair of games against the Admirals. Tonight will be the 21st meeting all-time between Springfield and Norfolk with the Admirals winning 15 of the first 20 match-ups. Both Springfield and Norfolk enter the 2007-08 season with a new National Hockey League affiliate. The Falcons are now with the Edmonton Oilers, while the Admirals are in their first year with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Falcons return home this afternoon after falling just short against the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday night losing 4-3. The Falcons remain in first-place in the Atlantic Division with a record of 3-2 through five games. Springfield center Patrick Thoresen netted a pair of goals for the Falcons earning the game's third star, while teammate Robert Nilsson collected a pair of assists in his Falcons debut Saturday might. Liam Reddox, who now has goals in back-to-back games, also converted for the Falcons last night. Defensemen Bryan Young, Ladislav Smid, and Sebastien Bisaillon all picked up their first assists of the year. Bisaillon and fellow rookie Theo Peckham both made their 2007-08 season and AHL debuts last night and for Peckham, it was his first pro game. For the second straight weekend, Springfield will conclude three games in three days on Sunday. Following today's contest, the Falcons will be off until Saturday, October 20 when they head to Albany for their first and only trip to the Capital District this season.
The Admirals head into Springfield concluding a three-game in three-day stretch this weekend. Norfolk was blanked by the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 2-0, on Friday night before collecting their first win of the young season Saturday evening in Albany. The Admirals beat the River Rats in a shootout last night by a score of 2-1. Norfolk took a 1-0 lead in the first period when David Schneider converted on the power play. Former Falcon, Marek Kvapil, scored the game-winner in the fourth round of the shootout. Norfolk netminder Ryan Munce stopped 36 of the 37 shots he faced in regulation, including all five shooters in the extra session. Following tonight's contest, Norfolk heads home to host the Binghamton Senators next Friday, October 19.
FALCONS TRANSACTIONS: The Springfield Falcons announced Saturday that the Edmonton Oilers have reassigned center Robert Nilsson and left wing Jean-Francois Jacques to the Falcons. Both players flew into Manchester, New Hampshire yesterday and played in the game last night against the Monarchs. The Oilers also recalled center Rob Schremp and Zack Stortini to Edmonton. Schremp was the game's first star in Springfield's 6-4 win over Portland on Friday with one goal and two assists, while Stortini was the game's third star on Friday collecting one goal and one assist.
Both Stortini and Schremp are tied with Patrick Thoresen for the team lead in scoring with five points. Defenseman Theo Peckham was also recalled by Springfield from their ECHL affiliate, the Stockton Thunder, on Saturday. Peckham made his AHL and pro debut Saturday night at Manchester.
WELCOME BACK: Falcons left wing Jean-Francois Jacques returned to the Falcons lineup last night after being recalled by the Oilers on Tuesday, October 9. Jacques made his Falcons debut on Saturday, October 6 against Worcester collecting one goal and one assist. He originally started the season in Edmonton before being reassigned to the Falcons for the first time this year on October 5. In three games with Springfield, Jacques has one goal and two assists for three points.
NORFOLK TEAM LEADERS: There will be several players in today's lineup that spent the 2006-07 campaign with the Falcons, including Norm Milley and Kyle Wanvig. Milley leads Norfolk in scoring with three assists in two games played. Milley spent last season as Springfield's captain and registered career highs in goals (26), assists (34) and points (60). Milley appeared in his 500th career pro game as a member of the Falcons on February 17, 2007 against the Worcester Sharks.
Wanvig leads the Admirals in goals thus far with two markers in three games. Wanvig netted both goals in Norfolk's season opener on October 5 against the Philadelphia Phantoms. In 23 games with the Falcons last year, Wanvig recorded 11 goals and seven assists for 18 points.
FORMER FALCONS: Along with Norm Milley and Kyle Wanvig, there are 11 other players on the Norfolk roster that spent time in Springfield. Mike Egener, Jay Rosehill, Blair Jones, Marek Kvapil, Justin Keller, Zbynek Hrdel, Brandon Elliott, Andy Rogers, Radek Smolenak, Morgan Cey, and Karri Ramo are all on the Norfolk roster and spent time with the Falcons last season.
