LOWELL, Mass. - Grant Marshall had a goal and two assists to help lead the Lowell Devils (2-1-0-0) to a 4-1 win over the Portland Pirates (1-4-0-0) at Tsongas Arena Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 5:02 into the first period on a goal by Clay Wilson. Jordan Parise got the start between the pipes for the Devils, and that early tally is all he would surrender in the contest. Shots were 8-8 through 20 minutes.
Lowell's power play struck early in the middle frame to knot the score. Stephen Gionta notched his second goal in as many games, on a two-man advantage to make it 1-1. Barry Tallackson assisted on the goal, giving him a point in each of the Devils first three contests. Less than a minute after the power play expired, Jason Ryznar put the Devils in front with his first of the season. Marshall recorded his first point of the night with an assist on the tally. That goal served as the game winner. Later, just seconds after serving a fighting major, Marshall added some insurance with his first of the season at 17:56. The Devils lit the lamp on three of their nine shots in the period.
The Devils withstood a third period barrage from Portland, during which the Pirates held a 14-6 lead in shots, and added another goal to the score sheet. Petr Vrana scored for the second straight game, with Ryznar and Marshall picking up helpers to complete their multi-point nights. Parise finished with 31 saves for his first win of the season.
Wednesday night is the premiere of Dollar Dawg Nights with the Lowell Devils, as they host the Providence Bruins at 7:05 p.m. Hot dogs cost just $1 during every Wednesday home game of the season. The game can be heard live on 980 WCAP, or viewed online through B2 Networks, by following the link on the Devils website. Doors open at 6:05 p.m.
