Fresno Falcons News Release

FRESNO, CALIF. - The Fresno Falcons announced today that the team has agreed to terms with rookie defenseman Bobby Davey for the 2008-09 season. He is the first new player to agree to terms with the Falcons for the upcoming season.

Davey enters the pro ranks after playing the previous four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with the Belleville Bulls, Sarnia Sting, and Peterborough Petes. In 240 career games in the OHL, the 21-year-old accumulated 682 penalty minutes, while also scoring 23 points on four goals and 19 assists. Davey led his team in penalty minutes in each of the last three seasons, while finishing second on his squad in 2004-05.

"Bobby Davey is a young guy that comes from a great pedigree in junior hockey," Falcons Assistant Coach and Assistant General Manager Ryan Mougenel said. "With us moving back to Selland Arena, we needed to add toughness and players that are hard to play against. Bobby is a player that brings that, and he should be a fan favorite this season."

"I'm pretty excited to get to Fresno to begin my pro career," Davey said. "I've heard that it is a great place to play, and I am looking forward to getting out there. My game is throwing big hits and protecting my teammates, but in today's game, you need to be able to do more than just fight, so I am looking forward to coming to Fresno and helping out on the back end."

Opening Night 2008 at Selland Arena is set for Friday, October 24, when the Falcons host their arch-rivals, the Bakersfield Condors, at 7:35 p.m. Season Ticket packages start at just $432, and are now available by calling the Falcons at (559) 485-7825.

Began in 1988-89 with five teams playing in four states, the Premier 'AA' Hockey League has grown into a coast-to-coast league that will have 23 teams in 16 states and British Columbia playing 828 games from Oct. 17, 2008 to Apr. 4, 2009. Eighteen of the 23 teams have played at least five years in their current city.

The third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League, the ECHL averaged 4,174 per game last season, marking the fourth year in row and the 16th time in the last 18 years that the league has averaged over 4,000 fans. The league has drawn over four million fans each of the last five years and 11 times in the past 12 seasons.
