Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Matt Fairel threw six innings of no-hit, no-run baseball and struck out five, and Jose Gualdron doubled three times as the Hillcats beat the Red Sox 5-3. The Hillcats snapped their three-game losing streak.

Unlike in the past three games, Lynchburg's offense was working against Salem's pitching staff. Jose Gualdron made his second start of the season in the field for the Hillcats. He led off the third inning with a double, and scored after the next batter, Josh Fellhauer, doubled him in.

Two innings later the Hillcats offense struck again. Kyle Day led off with a single, and Gualdron knocked his second double of the season. Fellhauer stepped in with runners at second and third and nobody out. Fellhauer grounded out to drive in the second Cats run. After a Cody Puckett walk, Gualdron scored on a wild pitch during Neftali Soto's at-bat. Puckett scored on a two-out single by Carlos Mendez.

Lynchburg scored three in the bottom of the fifth and added one more in the seventh. Salem scored twice off reliever Justin Freeman, and Gualdron again led off an inning with a double, his third of the game. Neftali Soto drove him in later in the inning.

Matt Fairel threw six almost-perfect innings. The only hitter to reach base was Ryan Lavarnway on an error by Gualdron. Fairel earns the win, his second of the season. Jordan Hotchkiss threw a scoreless one and 1/3 and Mace Thurman picked up his third save in as many opportunities. Thurman gave up one run and struck out one in the ninth.

The Hillcats move to 3-3 on the young season, one-half game out of first place pending Frederick's game tonight. Salem falls to 4-2.

Lynchburg and Salem conclude their 3-game series tomorrow at 6:05, gates open at 5. City Stadium will host the first "Thursday Cheers" of the season. Byron Massie will perform, and fans can enjoy $1 Yuengling, Miller Lite and soda presented by Yuengling and Miller Lite. Lynchburg throws out righty Curtis Partch (1-0, 1.80) against Salem lefthander Fabian Williamson (1-0, 1.80).
