FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Revolution midfielder Diego Fagundez was voted Major League Soccer's player of the week for Week 14 following his one-goal, two-assist performance in the Revolution's 5-0 victory over the LA Galaxy at Gillette Stadium yesterday. The Major League Soccer player of the week is selected each week by a panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).
Fagundez, already entering the game on a three-game scoring streak, broke out in front of a national television audience on the NBC Sports Network when he set up Saer Sene and Lee Nguyen for the game's first two goals, before striking for his fifth goal of the season in the 87th minute.
Sunday's match marked a career game for Fagundez, just 18 years old. It was his first multiple-point game of his young career, and his first career multiple-assist match. He also extended his goal-scoring streak to four games, the Revs' longest goal-scoring streak since 2005 when Clint Dempsey scored in five straight games between April 9 and May 7. The Revs are now 4-0-1 when Fagundez scores a goal this season.
Fagundez's player of the week nod is his first in MLS, and the Revolution's first of the 2013 season. It's also the club's first weekly honor since Week 10 of the 2012 season.
