San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
SAN DIEGO - Another thrilling victory keeps the Surf Dawgs championship hopes alive. A 4-3 victory, capped off by a single by Derek Pyles in the tenth inning, was made possible by a strong bullpen effort and twelve strikeouts by the visiting Fullerton Flyers.
The Surf Dawgs would score three runs in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Adam Mandel led off with a full count walk. He was doubled home by Tony Garcia, who went 3-for-5. The bases would be loaded after a walk and a single. Current player of the week Joey Huskins would continue his tear, singling home Garcia. Matt Maloney would follow it up with a sacrifice fly to center to push the lead to 3-0.
The Surf Dawgs would be held without a run until extra innings. Yoankis Turino was much better than his stat line as he was victimized by an early mental error by the Surf Dawgs defense. In the top of the third, two reached with one out. Jesse Schmidt, who logged all three RBI's on the night for the Flyers, lofted a fly to right. Maloney did not get a read of it off the bat and lost it entirely in the lights. When the ball hit the grass, two runs had scored to cut the lead to 3-2.
The fifth inning brought in the tying run when Schmidt singled home Gary Templeton Jr., who had walked earlier in the inning. Turino would leave with five innings pitched, surrendering five hits, three runs (all earned), while striking out six. Craig Frydendall settled down after the first inning blitz, giving up only those three runs in six innings.
The bullpen would come in to pitch five innings of shutout ball, the last two logged by Michael Leishman (1-1). In the tenth, Huskins walked and was moved over by a Maloney sacrifice bunt. Johnny Day came into pinch run for Huskins, and came charging down the line on Pyles single. The throw appeared to beat Day but a bobble by catcher Buddy Morales allowed Day to scoot in for the winning run. Pyles, in his first home game with the Surf Dawgs, went home the hero.
After the AFLAC All-American Baseball Classic on Saturday afternoon, the Flyers (16-9) and Surf Dawgs (11-12) are back in action at 6:05 PT. San Diego looks to win the series tomorrow, as Chris Gale (1-4) faces off against Chris Jakubauskas (6-1). Chris Gale, though he gave up four runs in six innings in his last start against Reno August 6th, gave up one run in his previous three starts, a course of 18 and a third innings.
