Orange County Flyers News Release

Derrick Pyles lined a Jon Grijalva pitch to right field to deliver the decisive hit in a Surf Dawgs 4-3 victory at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The 10th inning rally was set up by a leadoff walk to Joey Huskins and a sacrifice bunt by Matt Maloney. Johnny Day came into pinch run for Huskins and beat Buddy Morales's tag at the plate to win the game.

San Diego jumped on Fullerton early when Craig Frydendall was unable to retire any of the first five hitters in the 1st inning.

Tony Garcia's RBI double plated Adam Mandel with the first run of the game. Garcia scored when Huskins RBI single landed in left.

Maloney drove a sac fly to centerfield to make the first out of the night for the Surf Dawgs, but it capped their three-run 1st inning rally.

San Diego had a chance to extend their lead in the 2nd inning, but Frydendall got Mandel to ground into a key double play.

Frydendall struggled early, but he eventually settled in and pitched into the 7th inning.

The Flyers comeback was aided by a Surf Dawgs miscue in the 3rd inning. After Gabe Mayorga walked to leadoff the frame, Garry Templeton II lifted an easy fly ball to right field. Maloney lost track of the ball and let it land in front of him, so Templeton was able to walk into second with a double.

Jesse Schmidt drove home both Mayorga and Templeton to cut the lead to one.

Templeton sparked a 5th inning rally by walking after an extended at-bat. Schmidt again drove him home with a clutch single to tie the game.

Reed Dickert threw three scoreless innings in relief and stranded two inherited baserunners.

The Flyers missed two major chances to take a 4-3 lead.

First, in the 6th inning, Hector Zamora led off with a double. He moved to third on Joe Frazee's sac bunt, but Morales and Mayorga could not score the run from third.

Then, in the 9th inning, Joe Frazee led off with a double and moved to third on a failed pickoff play at second base. But reliever Mike Leishman was able to strikeout Templeton and get Schmidt to fly out to centerfield to end the inning.

The loss ended the Flyers second five-game winning streak of the season.

It also dropped the Flyers to one and a half games behind first place Chico in the second half race.

Chris Jakubauskas will look to get things back on track for the Flyers Saturday at 6 pm.
