Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BROOKLYN, NY --- The Vermonpt Expos finally broke out of their offensive slump on the road with four runs on 11 hits in the second game of a doubleheader, but still were swept in the twinbill by the Brooklyn Cyclones 3-0 and 6-4 in New York-Penn League Saturday night at Keyspan Park.
Ian Bladergroen accounted for all three of the runs in the opener with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning, while Evan MacLane tossed six shutout innings in his first appearance with the Cyclones.
Expos starter Devin Perrin had given up two hits and faced the minimum nine batters over the first three innings, but he walked and hit the first two batters of the fourth inning to give Brooklyn a pair of baserunners. Bladergroen then smashed Perrin's next pitch over the wall in right for his sixth home run of the season and a 3-0 Cylcone lead.
Vermont had just three hits in losing its seventh straight road game. The Expos got back-to-back two-out singles from Ja'Mar Clanton and Jason Tuttle in the third and a leadoff Kory Casto double in the fourth. Casto moved to third on a groundout, but did not score as Franklyn Jimenez popped up to short and Salomon Manriquez struckout.
In the nightcap, the Expos fell behind 2-0 before rallying to tie the game with single runs in the third and fourth innings. Josh Whitesell singled home Jimenez in the third inning for Vermont' first run of the game and first run on the road in 25 innings, then Casto had an RBI double in the fourth inning to tie the game 2-2.
But the Cyclones came right back in the bottom of the fourth inning to score three runs off Expos starter Brett Nyquist, including a two-run double from Andy Wilson for a 4-2 lead. Vermont came right back themselves in the fifth inning with an RBI double from Oscar Bernazard and an RBI single from Tuttle to get the Expos within one at 5-4 before the Cyclones added an insurance run.
Casto was 3-for-4 in game two and is now 10-for-16 in his last four games, while Jimenez was 2-for-4 and Whitesell 2-for-3 in the nightcap to snap a streak that had seen Vermont score just five runs in its last seven road games.
Nyquist (0-3) gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits over four innings to take the loss for Vermont, which was swept on the road in a doubleheader for the first time since August 29, 1997 at Hudson Valley.
Vermont (18-53), which has now lost its last eight road games, will play its final road game of the season on Sunday at Brooklyn beginning at 5:05 p.m. The Expos will then return home to Centennial Field for the last three games of the 2003 season, including a 5:05 p.m. start against Lowell on Labor Day Monday.
