Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

Burlington, VT- No team won Thursday night at Centennial Field as the New York-Penn League game between Brooklyn and Vermont was cancelled due to rain in the bottom of the fourth inning with the Cyclones ahead 5-3. But the individual winner of the night was Expos starting pitcher Jim Henderson.

That's because Henderson struggled over the four innings that he pitched, allowing five runs on nine hits. After the four innings Henderson's overall ERA was at 3.19, but reverts back to the 2.35 ERA that it was before the game since none of the game stats counted due to the rainout.

Brooklyn had scored a run on a two-out double and RBI single in the first inning, then added four more runs in the third inning on five consecutive hits. After a groundout to open the inning, the Cyclones got three straight singles to score one run and a two-run triple from Tyler Davidson for a 4-0 lead. The fourth run of the inning came on a Ambiorix Concepcion RBI single scoring Davidson.

The Expos got back into the game in the bottom of the third as they scored all three of their runs. A single, hit batter and error loaded the bases for Vermont before Doug Vroman singled off third baseman Grant Psomas' glove to score two runs and Luke Montz singled home another run an out later to cut the lead to 5-3.

Vermont almost had a fourth run in the inning, but Vroman was gunned down trying to score from second base on a Steve Mortimer single. The Cyclones loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but Henderson pitched out of trouble with a strikeout and flyout.

Just as David Travis was getting in the batters box to start the bottom of the fourth inning, a heavy rainstorm hit Centennial Field and pretty much flooded the infield before the tarp could be put down. The game was called roughly 45 minutes later.

Because it was the last meeting of the season between the two teams, the game will not be suspended or made up. Both teams are now on pace to play 75 regular-season games instead of scheduled 76.

Vermont (16-17) heads to Lowell to begin a three-game series against the Spinners on Friday night. The Expos won four of five games played at LeLecheur Park just last week and will have Steven Cook on the mound for the opener. Vermont returns to Centennial Field on Monday night for a quick two-game homestand with the Oneonta Tigers.
